Leaving your bags at the station..

If you want to leave your bags at a major European station between trains, there's usually some form of left luggage facility, either lockers or a staffed office. However, you won't always find facilities at smaller stations. Here's a guide to what's found where:

What sign to look for: Follow the signs with a pictogram of a suitcase inside a square with a key (lockers) or without a key (staffed office). Left luggage is Consigne in French, deposito bagagli in Italian, Consigna in Spanish, Gepäckraum in German.

Left luggage tips: Lockers are pretty secure, but don't deposit valuables such as passports or laptops. Don't forget that hotels will usually look after bags free of charge, if you check out in the morning but have an afternoon or evening train to catch, or if you check-in early before your room is ready.

Left luggage in London & the UK..

• London St Pancras has a left luggage office run by the Excess Baggage Company, where you can deposit items for £7.50 for up to 3 hours, £12.50 for up to 24 hours, then £7.50 for each 24 hour period after that. Open 06:00-22:00 Monday-Saturday, 07:00-22:00 Sunday. Bags are X-rayed before deposit. The left luggage is located on the lower level, near the domestic (Midland Mainline) ticket office, a short walk from the Eurostar departures area. See www.left-baggage.co.uk.

  Money-saving tip: Check Stasher.com. This allows you to leave your bags at the Premier Inn across the road from St Pancras (or at similar Premier Inns near Euston & Kings Cross) for only £6 per day, open 07:00-23:00. Stasher.com has left luggage locations across the UK and mainland Europe.

• London Liverpool Street has a left luggage office near platform 10, handy if you're leaving or arriving on the Stena Line Rail & Sail service to Hoek van Holland & Amsterdam. • Birmingham New Street, Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, Leeds, Liverpool Lime St, Manchester Piccadilly also have left luggage offices, see www.left-baggage.co.uk for times & prices.

• York has a left luggage office, see www.leftluggageyork.co.uk for times & prices.

• There are also small left luggage offices at Glasgow Queen Street, Oban, Inverness, and left luggage lockers at Fort William.

• Other stations in the UK generally don't have any left luggage facility.

Left luggage in Paris & France..

• There are left luggage facilities at several Paris stations, so you can leave you bags and explore between trains. However, there are no left luggage facilities in Paris for bikes, surfboards or skis.

• Cost of lockers in all Paris stations: A small locker costs €5.50 for up to 48 hours and will take a medium-sized backpack. A medium locker costs €7.50 and might take 2 medium backpacks. A large locker (around 1 metre high) costs €9.50 and will take a large suitcase or 2 large backpacks. No keys are involved, you shut your locker, pay the money and a receipt is printed showing a code for opening the locker. There's are change machines which (if they're working!) can convert €10, €20 or €50 banknotes into the coins needed for the lockers. It's reported that credit cards may now be accepted as well as cash.

• Paris Gare du Nord has left luggage lockers (consigne automatique in French), open 06:15 to 23:15 daily. The locker area is located downstairs under the main concourse opposite platform 3 - when you walk off the end of the Eurostar platforms onto the concourse, look for downward stairs just ahead and to the right of you. All your bags (even those you're not leaving) are X-rayed before entering the locker area as a security check.

  G adobe reader. Tip: Alternatively, if you book your bag in at Stasher.com you can leave your bags at the Hotel Ibis Styles across the road from Paris Nord for €8 per day, open 24/7. Stasher.com has left luggage locations across the UK and mainland Europe.

• Paris Gare de Lyon has left luggage lockers, open 06:15 to 22:00. X-ray check at the entrance. Locker sizes and prices the same as Gare du Nord. The locker area is in Hall 3 one level below the platforms, in the corner at the extreme platform N end of Hall 3. More information about location.

• Paris Gare d'Austerlitz has left luggage lockers, open 07:00 to 23:30. It's just outside the main street entrance to the station, you'll see it on your way in from the metro. X-ray check at entrance. Locker sizes and prices the same as Gare du Nord. The lockers may be affected by building work at the station, so check current situation at www.gares-sncf.com, select Paris Austerlitz, then click Services en gare.

• Paris Gare de l'Est has a staffed left luggage office, open 06:00 to 23:45. It's downstairs from the main concourse, in a corner off the shopping centre area. Bags are X-rayed when accepted for storage. Locker sizes and prices the same as Gare du Nord.

• Paris Gare Montparnasse has left luggage lockers, normally open daily 07:00-23:00, but they are temporarily closed due to building work Sept-Nov 2017.

• Paris Gare de Bercy has no left luggage lockers, so use those at the Gare de Lyon 700m away.

• Paris St Lazare has no left luggage lockers, but there are privately-run lockers 4 minutes walk away, see www.lockers.fr.

• Lille Europe has a staffed left luggage facility, open 07:30-20:00. It's hidden away at the extreme south end of the station's passenger concourse, beyond 'Accès A', and not well signed. It costs €4 per item up to 2 hours, €5.50 per item for up to 10 hours, €9.50 for up to 24 hours.

• Lyon Part Dieu has left luggage lockers, open daily 06:15-23:00, in varying sizes from €5.50 to €9.50.

• Marseille St Charles has left luggage lockers, open daily 08:15-21:00, in varying sizes from €5.50 to €9.50.

• Nice station has a private staffed left luggage office, open daily 08:00-20:00, cost not known. Alternatively, the Hotel Belle Meunière across the road from the station may keep bags for you for around €5 per item.

• Bordeaux has left luggage lockers, open 07:00-22:30 weekdays, 07:00-20:30 Sats, 09:15-22:45 Suns.

• Toulouse has left luggage lockers, open daily 08:30-22:00, same prices as Paris Nord.

• Avignon has no left luggage facility, but in summer there's a privately-run staffed one 4 minutes walk from Avignon Centre station at, Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny, see www.consigne-avignon.fr for dates of operation & opening times.

• Dijon, Strasbourg, Nantes, Montpellier also have left luggage facilities.

• Cannes, Biarritz, Lourdes, Hendaye, Perpignan, Nimes, Reims, Rennes, Calais and most smaller stations have no left luggage facility.

Left luggage in Brussels & Belgium..

• Brussels Midi has both luggage lockers and a staffed left luggage facility near the Eurostar check-in and Thalys reception. Both are open 24 hours a day, the staffed facility costs €8.00 per item per calendar day, the 3 sizes of lockers cost €4.50, €5, €5.50 per 24 hours.

• Bruges has a staffed left luggage office and lockers, open 06:00-22:00. Expect the charge per item to be around €6 per 24h.

• Antwerp Central has left luggage lockers, expect prices to be €4.50, €5, €5.50 for small, medium or large for 24h.

• Ghent, Ostend, Liege, Namur, Charleroi and a number of other stations also have left luggage facilities. To check whether there's a staffed office or lockers at a Belgian station and the opening hours, go to www.belgiantrain.be. Click EN top right for English, click 'Stations and on-board services' then 'Search a station'.

Left luggage in Amsterdam & the Netherlands..

• Amsterdam Centraal has luggage lockers in two sizes, €7 for the first 24 hours for a small locker (90cm x 45cm x 40cm), €10 for a large locker (90cm x 60cm x 40cm). You can pay by Maestro or by Visa credit card, but not cash. The locker area is open from 05:00 until 00;45. Maximum deposit 72 hours.

  The left luggage lockers are located on the ground floor at the eastern end of the main station building: If you walk in through the main station entrance, turn immediately right, walk along that passageway a little way until you come to another set of ticket gates. You'll see the baggage area just inside the gateline - any ticket valid that day (the one you arrived on, or the one you will leave with) will let you in & out of the ticket gates as much as you like. If you have a Thalys, IC, ICE or Eurostar ticket, the QR barcode on that ticket should work the gates.

  There's a also a private left luggage facility in the city at Damrak 247 which accepts cash, see www.lockerpoint.com.

• Rotterdam, Utrecht, Den Haag have similar lockers to Amsterdam, at similar prices, all accepting Maestro or Visa cards.

Left luggage in Switzerland..

• Geneva, Basel SBB, Zurich HB, Bern, Lausanne, Montreux, Spiez, Interlaken Ost, Lucerne, Lugano, Chur, Visp, Brig & most other Swiss stations of any size have luggage lockers.

• The price is usually CHF 6 for a small (24.8cm x 42cm x 75cm), CHF 9 for a large (44.7cm x 61.5cm x 88cm), per 24 hours.

• Lockers are usually open throughout the period that the station is open, for example Zurich lockers are open 04:15-01:30 Mon-Fri, 00:00-24:00 weekends.

• Zurich HB, Basel SBB, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, Lugano, Chur, Zermatt, St Moritz, Pontresina, Davos Platz & a number of other stations have staffed left luggage offices. The office at Zurich HB is open 07:30-19:45 daily, Zermatt 07:00-20:00 daily, St Moritz 05:30-21:15 daily.

• To check if there are left luggage lockers or a staffed left luggage office at any Swiss station, with locker sizes & prices or office opening hours, go to www.sbb.ch. Click 'en' top right for English'. Click 'Station & services' then 'Our rail stations'. Click 'Find your station' buried in the list on the left. Search for your station, then click on 'Equipment' and look down for 'Lockers'. If there's a staffed left luggage office, it will be shown under 'Services' as 'Left luggage office'.

Left luggage in Italy..

• Rome Termini, Florence SMN, Turin Porta Nuova, Milan Centrale, Venice Santa Lucia, Verona Porta Nuova, Bologna Centrale, Naples Centrale all have a staffed left luggage office.

  Opening hours are 06:00-23:00 at Rome Termini, 06:00-23:00 at Milan Centrale, 06:00-23:00 at Florence SMN, 08:00-20:00 at Turin Porta Nuova, 06:00-23:00 in Venice Santa Lucia, 07:00-21:00 in Verona Porta Nuova, 06:00-22:00 in Bologna Centrale & 07:00-23:00 at Naples Centrale. 7 days a week.

  The price per bag is €6 for the first 5 hours, then €1 per hour for 6-12 hours, then €0.50 per hour for the thirteenth & later hours. There's a weight limit which may or may not be enforced in practice, 20Kg per item.

  Maximum length of deposit 5 days.

• There are also left luggage facilities at Pisa Centrale, Venice Mestre, Trieste, Genoa Brignole, Genoa Piazza Principe, La Spezia, Treviso, Padua, Pescara, Rimini, Ancona, Pesaro, Assisi, Perugia, Bari, Messina, Palermo, Reggio di Calabria (06:00-21:00). Expect similar prices.

• There are no left luggage facilities at Rome Tiburtina, Milan Porta Garibaldi or at smaller stations including Florence Campo di Marte, Florence Rifredi, Rome Ostiense, Turin Porta Susa, Civitavecchia, San Remo, Ventimiglia, Livorno, Lucca, Siena (though the nearby bus station has a facility), Montepulciano, Modena, Ravenna, Peschiera del Garda, Orvieto, Brindisi, Lecce, Taranto, Salerno, Messina (use the SAIS bus terminal nearby), Catania (you're directed to Atripical on Duca di Genoa 6, open 09:00-19:00), Siracuse (use the Station Bar just outside the station), Pompeii or Sorrento.

Left luggage in Spain..

• Madrid Chamartin has luggage lockers open 07:00-23:00 daily. Small locker 3 euros, medium €3.50, large €5. The lockers are across the road from the main concourse. There's an X-ray check of all bags entering locker area.

• Madrid Atocha has luggage lockers open 05:30-22:20 every day. Small locker €3.10, medium €3.60, large €5.20. The lockers are in the old trainshed with the tropical gardens, at the far right-hand end as you walk away from the modern train departure concourse. There's an X-ray check of all bags entering locker area.

• Barcelona Sants has a left luggage office, open 05:30-23:00 daily. €6 up to 2 hours, €10 for 2 to 24 hours. There's an X-ray check of all bags entering locker area. However, there are no lockers at Barcelona Franca station.

• Malaga (07:00-23:00 daily), Seville (06:00-00:30), Valencia Nord (08:30-20:30), Zaragoza (07:00-23:00) also have left luggage lockers, at similar prices to Barcelona & Madrid.

• Alicante: New lockers are reported at the head of the platforms on the far side of the concourse from the main station entrance. Opening hours & prices are not known but they are likely to be similar to other Spanish stations.

• San Sebastian: There are no lockers at Amara station or the Renfe mainline station, but the bus station has lockers, €5 for a large locker for 24h. The bus station is underground, next to the Renfe mainline station.

• Girona reportedly has a new facility, €4 for up to 24 hours.

• There are no left luggage facilities at Cordoba, Granada, Algeciras, Ronda, Santander, Bilbao, Figueres, Figueres Vilafant, Segovia, Toledo, Salamanca, Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and all smaller stations. In Cordoba and also in Santander, try the long-distance bus station across the road from the stations which may have lockers.

• To check whether a Spanish station has a left luggage facility, go to www.adif.es (ADIF is the equivalent of the UK's Network Rail). Click 'English' at the top, then 'Infrastructure & stations' at the top, then 'Stations' top left and search for your station. If there's a left luggage facility available, 'Horario consignas' will be listed with opening times.

Left luggage in Portugal..

• Lisbon Santa Apolonia, Lisbon Oriente, Lisbon Rossio, Lisbon Cais do Sodre all have left luggage lockers, maximum storage 24 hours. The lockers at Lisbon Santa Apolonia cost €3 for a small locker, €3.50 for a medium and €5 for a large, for 7 to 24 hours, less for shorter periods.

• Porto Campanha & Porto Sao Bento all have left luggage lockers, maximum storage 24 hours.

Left luggage in Germany..

• Munich Hbf, Frankfurt (Main) Hbf, Düsseldorf Hbf & most other main stations in Germany have plenty of small & medium lockers, open 24 hours a day. Small lockers €3, medium lockers €5 per 24 hours.

• Cologne Hbf has several unusual left luggage machines in the main corridor outside the ticket office. The machines take you bag down to an automated storage area and retrieve it again when you come back. Price €3 for up to 2 hours, €6 for up to 24 hours, €12 up to 48 hours, €18 for up to a maximum of 72 hours.

• Hamburg Hauptbahnhof has both lockers and a staffed 'Gepack center' (left luggage), open 08:00-20:00 daily, €5 per item.

• Berlin Hauptbahnhof has both lockers and a staffed 'Gepack center' (left luggage), open 06:00-22:00 daily, €5 per item, X-ray machine in use.

• To check whether a German station has luggage lockers, go to www.bahnhof.de and search for the station. If it has luggage lockers, this will be shown with a green tick in the features list. Lockers = Schließfacher in German.

Left luggage in Austria..

• Vienna Hbf, Vienna Westbahnhof, Vienna Meidling, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz, Graz, St Anton, Bregenz, Feldkirch, Kitzbühel, Wels & other major stations in Austria have lockers.

• Small locker €2.00, medium €2.50, large €3.50, jumbo size €4.50.

• Locker sizes: Small 45x35x85cm, medium 60x35x85cm, large 90x35x85cm, jumbo 90x50x85cm.

Left luggage in other European cities

It's usually safe to assume that any major city railway station in Europe will have a 'left luggage' facility, either a staffed facility or self-service lockers or both. When changing trains with some time to spare, you can leave your luggage and explore the town. Here are some examples:

• Belgrade: There are no left luggage facilities at either Belgrade Centar or Belgrade Topcider stations. There is a left luggage facility at the main bus station, or ask a local hotel.

• Brasov & Sighisoara: Left luggage office in a corner off the underpass beneath the platforms, 5 lei per item, possibly more for larger items. Opening hours not known. There's reportedly now a staffed left luggage service at Sighisoara station, 7 lei per 24h.

• Bratislava: There's a staffed left luggage office at Bratislava Hlavna, open all day but with odd breaks: 04:00–06:15, 06:30–10:30, 11:00–16:45, 17:00–21:30, 21:45–23:55. Unusually, they weigh your bags and charge by weight, up to 15Kf €2 per day, over 15Kg €2.50 per day. There are also self-service luggage lockers on platform 1, open 24/7. Bratislava Petrzalka also has a left luggage office, open 04:00–23:15. You can check this at www.zssk.sk, listed under Services, Services at stations.

• Bucharest: Left luggage office at Bucharest Gara de Nord, 50m past the Relay newsagents. 4 Lei (around €1) per 24 hours. There are also private left luggage lockers at Bucharest Gara de Nord see www.romobility.ro, 10 Lei for 12 hours.

• Budapest: Budapest Keleti has luggage lockers downstairs directly under platform 7, open 03:45-00:00, 600 forints per item per 24 hours for a small locker, 800 forints for a large locker. There are similar luggage lockers at Budapest Nyugati & Budapest Deli.

• Cesky Krumlov: Luggage storage is available at Cesky Krumlov station 07:30-19:30 in summer, 07:30-17:30 winter, ask at the ticket office. You can also store bags for a small fee at the Infocenter in Svornosti Square, see www.ckrumlov.info for opening hours.

• Copenhagen: Copenhagen has a staffed left luggage office and lockers, in the far right corner as you walk in the main entrance near the stairs to platforms 11 & 12. Open 05:30-01:00 Mondays-Saturdays, 06:00-01:00 Sundays. Staffed office 55 Kr per item, small lockers 50 Kr, larger lockers 60 Kr. Some lockers take coins, others work with credit cards.

• Istanbul & Ankara: A limited number of luggage lockers are available at Istanbul Sirkeci station, TL5 small, TL10 large, and Ankara station, TL5 small, TL7.5 large. Alternatively, there's a privately-run left luggage shop in Istanbul near Taksim Square, http://bagaj.co/eng/, although I have had no reports from users.

• Kiev has luggage lockers at the main station below the ground floor, large ones cost less than22 UAH ( €1).

• Krakow & Zakopane have left luggage lockers accessible 24/7. A small, medium (backpack-sized), large & extra-large locker costs 8, 12, 15 & 22 zlotys per 24 hours. Krakow also has two staffed left luggage offices, one railway-run, one private. In the railway-run office, a medium item costs 6 zlotys per 24 hours.

• Ljubljana: €2 & €3 luggage lockers, on platform 1.

• Moscow: Moscow Byelorussia has a left-luggage office to the left of Platform 1 approaching from the main entrance. Go round the outside of the station to go through the security check and exit onto Platform 1. Cost 140 rubles (around €3 or £2.70) per item per day at the staffed counter. There are lockers but the instructions are in Russian.

• Prague:Prague Hlavni has luggage lockers in several sizes including a size that will fit a backpack or small case but not larger suitcases. Regular lockers cost 80 koruna (about £2.30 or €2.90) per 24 hours, larger lockers 100 koruna per 24 hours, maximum permitted time 72 hours. The lockers are open all day from 03:30 until 00:30. The locker room is located off the northernmost of the three passageways towards the platforms - the left-hand one as you walk into the station.

  There's also a staffed left luggage office open 06:00-23:00 daily with similar prices and the ability to store larger items such as skis or bicycles. You can pay in koruna or euros at the staffed left luggage office, €2.50 for small items, €4 for larger items per 24 hours. The staffed office is located off the southernmost passageway towards the platforms, the right-hand one as you walk into the station.

• Sofia station has left luggage office downstairs from main hall, 06:00-22:00, 2 lev (about €1.10)

• Stockholm Central has left luggage lockers, medium size 50Kr, large size 60Kr.

• Warsaw:Warsaw Centralna has luggage lockers in the passageway at the top of the steps to the platforms, around 9 zlotys (£2) per locker per 24 hours. There's a staffed left luggage office off the same passageway, 10 zlotys per item per 24 hours, open 07:00-18:20, 19:00-06:20 with breaks 10:00-10:15 & 14:00-14:30.

• Zagreb: 15 & 20 Kuna luggage lockers are available. There are also lockers at Split, open 06:00-22:00 or use lockers in the bus station next door.
